So what is it about this Freeform radio thing that I seem to have?

It all begins around the summer of '65. It was a time of magic for me and my friend Dan. We camped out nearly every night that summer. We usually roamed the streets of our upper New York state town, harmlessly wearing ourselves out and falling asleep in the tent in Dan's back yard. I always carried my Bradford transister radio with us. I received it as a passing present that year and it had given me and Danny magic at our fingertips. The summer nights filled with Beatles! Stones! Counting flowers on the wall...and "Open all night ...Barney's men's stores ...special Edwardian suits" clear and crisp each from their acoustic barrels in a cellar at 77 WABC the home of the All Americans! I soon tired of the rotated selections and discovered that the transistor had a switch that pointed to letters FM and AM. I wondered what the FM would bring. So working the thumb wheel which tuned the station I soon found that mostly nothing actually was being received on this side so I click it back to AM and yeah, here's a hit I love.

After a day or two my disinterest with the same 25 songs (and I was nuts about those groups mind you, just desirous to hear something else!) back to the FM side up and down the dial searching for what I didn't know....then around mid of that summer around 2 or three in the morning I hit some thing. Around (2fm or a little before it I listened to a girl who was playing discs! Long Plays of Classical and Methodist music!!! ......AND every once in a while "MY BOYFRIEND'S BACK!" or some chick rock song!

The contrast gave me goose bumps!!!  I was hooked!  I commenced what has been a life's long appreciation of underground and alternative programming philosophies, while putting them into actual practice at various forums.

I am so pleased to be now heard on the  World Wide Web in two places: Right here on Homegrownradio.com on Monday evenings from 9pm till midnight and on Tuesday afternoons from 3 till 5 pm you can pick up my Internet show originating from the studios of WDVRFM on 89.7 in Hunterdon County N.J. and on 91.9 in the greater Trenton/Princeton area!

Know thy Self is the translation from the Latin.

Freeform radio not only is the best format created for Radio Broadcast but IS the natural format of Human beings. For centuries folks in a area gathered together, young and old alike, Master and slave, Lord and serf to enjoy entertainment that was usually brought to them by way of the traveling minstrels, or gypsy circus, presenting a wide array of delights that enriched all the folks that came to watch. As radio and television came into our lives, the most successful and ground breaking were the variety programs. Many an unknown artist was helped along the way by show hosts who paid no attention to the demographic information. They were bold enough to give a chance to the impractical and obscure. An informational survey might tell you how popular someone might be...but they do not create the culture! In fact, because it is a picture of what was...it can not spot an Elvis or Beatles. It discards blues and Jazz as too narrow to gain any huge mainstream appeal.

Ralph then...

... and Now

He has been called the "King of Freeform Radio!"

For over THIRTY years Ralph Drake has been stumbling into music scenes all over the east coast. From his days at the Fillmore East thru the Woodstock Festival, Jersey's  shore shows, Cee Bee Gee Bee's through New York's  important village happenings from the 1960's through today, he has witnessed all the music from all the artists who called the  East Coast Megalopolis their home.

Born in Port Jervis, New York, Ralph says his life was changed the night the Beatles sprung up on the Ed Sullivan show. "Within a few weeks, I received a radio AND THAT IS WHERE IT ALL STARTS!"
